It is a frequent misconception that just because something is universal that is doesn’t shine in any aspect in particular. That is the same with universal body armor, where the exceptional adaptability of this type of armor is the main aspect of the product. The versatility of uses means that you can hide this vest under plain clothes if you need to go incognito. But, if you want to use it as an external carrier, it will also give you some of the utility seen on other external carriers that can’t be hidden. For police, private security, and any other type of law enforcement, this is a good choice for almost any mission. The armor is light, can be patrolled in, it can be concealed, or it can become action-ready for serious engagements in just seconds. There are three main advantages of universal armor:
  • Thin and light vest
  • Quick to take on and off
  • Velcro® pads for external utility
The slimming effect that formed this body armor into what it is also made it somewhat more affordable. For most people working in the security sector, the price of this armor will be less than most dedicated concealed vests or overt armor. And, with a number of modules and pouches for sale, those who buy this type of armor will quickly find it to be an ideal daily driver for a vast majority of jobs and situations.

Advantages of Universal Body Armor

The advantages of such a tactically flexible armor are easy to spot, but you might need some creativity to utilize them to the fullest. Primarily, you can wear this armor anywhere. With the weight slightly over 7lbs in total for the biggest models and equally distributed all over your body, wearing it covertly under a light jacket will be easy. There are no issues with wearing such armor for the whole day, even in extended shifts. Second, because it is made from soft ballistic armor, the coverage of this vest is exceptional. Due to its ability to be worn both over and beneath clothes, it has adaptable sides. These can be adorned with a cummerbund, but don’t need to be. Thus, even if your BMI isn’t what it used to be, you can still get excellent coverage. Finally, if you have Velcro® pouches you can keep them in your car or somewhere else where they would be handy and just press them on the vest when you need them for action. This versatility might remove the need for wearing a battle belt entirely, or give you even more options if you are wearing one.

What Levels of Protection can Universal Armor Have?

Because one of the primary functions of the universal vest is that it can be hidden, it must be flexible. All types of soft ballistic body armor are possible, ranging from NIJ Level IIa to Level IIIa. On the lower end, with level IIa, the armor becomes really light and flexible. This makes it easy to conceal even behind an average shirt. This armor will still stop a bullet from a 9mm, which is the most common assailant weapon. But, if you find yourself in more dangerous situations more often, and may need protection from Magnum rounds, you will need to go thicker with NIJ Level IIIa armor.

When Would You Need Universal Armor?

Short of very specialized army combat missions, or situations where you are up against anti-personnel rifles, you can use a universal vest at all times. For security companies, police forces, and even individual protection this type of armor is ideal because of its adaptability. It may be slightly more cumbersome than dedicated covert vests or armored clothes, but it is still really light and practical. And for those that don’t need to wear body armor at all times, a universal vest can be strapped over any type of clothes in seconds and be ready for action. With a few attachments or pouches, it would be an ideal police-type bulletproof vest.

Is Universal Armor Enough?

For an overwhelming majority of domestic security situations, an NIJ Level IIIa universal body armor will be enough. Because of the wide protective area, it doesn’t require some of the additional modules as other vests but can be fitted with some auxiliary armor if needed. Unless you are in an active army, where the enemy will regularly have military-grade weapons, tactics, and often explosives, just wearing the universal vest will be enough to protect your life. It is currently the main type of body armor for many police forces and private security firms around the country, and for a good reason.
