Calling shorts tactical might sound like an oxymoron, but there is a measurable difference between casual shorts that we might use for a stroll down the beach, and shorts designed to assist in combat training or some more extreme activities. Some might think that tactical shorts would be good for regions where heat and humidity is an issue. But, exposing your skin to both sunlight, small cuts, and dangerous insects and bacteria is never a good idea. Tactical shorts are used mostly for training by both army and police units around the world. They come in handy when you want to mix lightweight and easy cooling and drying with some tactical abilities and moderate gear. There are three things that a pair of shorts need to have to be considered tactical:
  1. Quick-dry durable material
  2. Ergonomic design
  3. Sturdy pockets
Tactical shorts for security will often look good, especially in the camo design, but that is not their primary function. Unlike normal shorts, they will need to allow for as much movement as possible without flapping around. Thankfully, those looking to buy tactical shorts will find good models for sale. New materials and designs have allowed new tactical shorts to be more durable and carry even more without the belt and without any price increase.

What are Tactical Shorts?

Tactical shorts are, as the name suggests, legwear that goes to the knees used to increase the operational possibility of people training or doing a variety of activities.  This allows squads and companies to extend the types of training and include some gear into the regular schedule. Because the pockets of the tactical shorts don’t disrupt mobility, it is possible to add multi-tools, torches, radio devices, or similar items to the training regimen. Additionally, tactical shorts are much tightly knit to increase their durability. Because it is probable that you will crawl, crouch, climb, and roll in these shorts, they need to be able to withstand such wear and tear on the regular and not break in places where it would be inconvenient to the wearer. Finally, although tactical shorts share this feature with most modern swimwear, they always need to dry quickly. Retaining moisture will decrease for how the exercise can last, and it can have all sorts of medical and tactical downsides to the wearer.

General Advantages

In most cases, tactical shorts won’t be used in the field when on a mission. They might be used for some police activities like urban bicycle patrols, but that would round up any type of direct job-related applications. The general advantages of such shorts are with military training and outdoor sports and activities. Because of their durability and utility, they can be used for anything from orienteering to proving ground training for certain types of equipment. Also, there is a number of civilian applications that can come quite handy to avid outdoorsman and women.

Training Applications

When it comes to training, tactical shorts can be used for anything short a mock battle. And, as they are usually cheaper to maintain than any type of tactical pants, they have become the preferred choice for most organizations. For running and endurance training, these shorts are a light and dry alternative that simulates how tactical pants would act in a similar situation. They are not as easy as jock-shorts to run in but are quite comfortable. But, unlike simple shorts, the tactical variety has a solid carrying capacity. Because of that capacity they can be used for orienteering or short-term survival training. With the addition of medkits and water purifiers, they can serve as a solid base for worst-case survival training, including the one without MREs. Finally, they are a good option for a training course, especially for new recruits. The tactical advantage can be used similar to what it would be with pants, and cooling will be faster until the greenhorns get into shape.

Civilian Applications

Because such tactical apparel is mostly used for military training and not open combat, civilian applications for tactical shorts are even wider than what they would be for any army. For day-to-day purposes these shorts can be used the same as any other pair, but with some added pockets. As casual wear, these shorts will probably last indefinitely. Also, all kinds of sports such as biking, trekking, hiking, climbing, camping, or hunting would benefit from the available extra storage and the fact they dry quickly.
