You don’t need to be a hardened veteran to know that you need isolation between yourself and the ground when sleeping. Everyone who has endured a high school summer camp knows that is you fall asleep on the ground you will often wake up with a cold. Without sleeping mats or sleeping pads, the grounds just pulls the heat from us. Additionally, for long extended military deployments, or even longer camping trips, these losses in heat equate to losses in energy. Even if you don’t get sick and isolate from the ground to a point, you will need to intake more food and have a slower metabolism. There are three things that isolation sleeping mats and pads need to have:
  1. Heat & cold insulation
  2. Anti-microbial properties
  3. Low weight and portability
Thankfully, it is now possible to find models for sale that combine the first and third points, and for a reasonable price. Those looking to buy good models will have their pick when it comes to size and design. Also, while the front-end marketing material will say ‘cold protection’ what you need to look for is moisture protection and heat retention, with the former being slightly more important.

What are Sleeping Mats and Pads?

There is a wide variety of products under this name, especially if you search for them globally. It can include anything from tatami mats to tactical sharpshooter gear. But, in the West, this is most often the name for insulation pads used between the ground and the sleeping bag. In warmer weather, these pads can be used without a bag, and there might be some top-range bags with these features installed inside them. But, sleeping without them is not only uncomfortable but also very dangerous for your health. The mats themselves can be made from a variety of materials, depending on their purpose. Tactical sleeping mats are usually made from layers of different materials, trying to create a synergic effect at the lowest weight. Materials will include thermal-retaining fibers and rubber sheets, as well as a few layers of natural fibers to prevent molding and add to comfort. Finally, tactical sleeping mats will usually be folded instead of rolled. Because of the firmer materials inside, it is often problematic to twist the mats as they can lose integrity, which is why manufacturers make them into multiple foldable squares that line on top of each other.

Ground Insulation Capabilities

Depending on the terrain, the morning temperatures of the ground, even in summertime, can range from 55°F to 70°F. While this doesn’t sound drastic, that is not the same as the air being that temperature. Rather, imagine sleeping in water. The toll on your body heat is considerable. The insulation capabilities of the mat are made to work regardless of your choice of sleeping bag or tent. The mat needs to stop all heat from going downwards and any moisture from going upwards. With the use of some novel and some ancient materials, this can be achieved at a lower weight than ever, and can even be reasonably comfortable. Regretfully, the effect is never complete and some heat loss will occur. Due to internal blood circulation, this phenomenon will impact female humans more than males and if there is prolonged use of the mat it would be wise to place something between the mat and the naked soil. This can be anything from twigs to leaves, to other types of cloth and space blankets.

Improved Shooter Performance

Sleeping mats can easily double as shooting mats and experienced sharpshooters often used them if they need to wait for the shot in hiding.  Staying close to the ground, especially with your front downwards can cause discomfort and faster breathing. This is bad for accuracy and will lower the shooter’s efficiency. But, with a pad, they can lay in wait like this for hours at a time. The same principle is often used by hunters waiting for wild boar or deer, where you often need to stand still for quite a while before you spot a valid target.

Soldier Sustainability

Both adequate sleeping cycles and thermal protection are essential for soldier sustainability. Keeping the physical health of those in the field at the highest possible level will allow for a much wider range of tactical options, and ensure that every mission is completed in the best possible way.  As tactical mats are easily portable and can be attached to the backpack, keeping it in case of a prolonged mission can prove to be a wise choice for both companies and individuals.
