During a long mission, your tactical backpack becomes your lifeline. Everything you need to survive and stay healthy need to be neatly packed in that bit of space, and be light enough for you to carry over long distances. Unlike civilian luggage that can look like a backpack but is meant to be placed on a train after a day of walking on asphalt, tactical backpacks can’t dangle around or leave you unbalanced. Even though it is not recommended, you will often need to have your firearms at the ready and be able to fight with your pack on you. Because of this, there are some features that need to be included in army rucksacks and tactical backpacks. Ideally, you want to have five aspects included in a military backpack:
  • No excess weight
  • High carrying position
  • Durable, tear-resistant and hydrophobic materials
  • Keeps gear fixed and noiseless
  • Adaptable and adjustable
Additionally, there may be requirements of your specific type of mission that you will need to consider if you want to buy a tactical backpack. With a variety of packs for sale, you will want to be creative and imagine all the situations you might find yourself in. Some activities like combat and hiking can exclude each other in most points, but the army and police activities are fairly similar and only have slight variations in what you will need. Because of this, private security companies will want to find bags for sale that can do both types of missions, as their jobs are often analogous to them.

What Is the Best Military Backpack?

Most veterans, at least for the US Armed Forces, fondly remember their MOLLE rucksack. While some emotional influence may exist, it is due to two things: they are easy to carry and can adjust to the mission. Even today these military surplus backpacks are the top sellers back home. The best military backpack will always try to be as high up as possible on your back. This way you will be carrying most of the weight with your legs, and not your back and abs muscles. But, that pack will make you more top-heavy, so it needs to be balanced. Any mission backpack, including sling pack backpacks and specialized cargo bags, will be a game of giving and take. If you stay versatile you will be able to optimize your pack to carry exactly what you need. But, being the jack of all trades and the master of none can have its downsides if you want to have the biggest tactical advantage in a single mission.

Are Combat Backpacks any Good?

While large cargo packs will often be called a combat backpack, this term usually refers to assault packs that are smaller and used for a single mission or short deployment. By all means, these are usually some of the best packs when it comes to endurance and weight to capacity ration. Additionally, they will usually be streamlined to allow you to crawl and hide without catching your pack on the surrounding terrain. The downside is that assault packs or combat backpacks are usually a lot smaller than a big cargo pack. They can fit something like a laptop and will house your medkit and some shield from the cold, usually a space blanket. But, you won’t be able to carry something like specialized bags for helmet kits or any large strategic equipment. Ideally, you want to be already equipped with everything you need when you drop out for the mission, do your thing, then come back. Assault backpacks are there to support any contingencies and allow the medic to carry their heavier tools.

What Backpack Does the US Army Use?

The current standard-issue US Armed Forces are the MOLLE-2 rucksack, which refers to the MOLLE webbing on the back of it. This is mostly due to its high versatility because you can attach any type of PALS equipment to make a semi-permanent bond. But, that is not the only type of backpack used. Especially for longer missions where the viability of constant air supplying is disputable, the infantrymen will carry larger packs that will allow them to survive and keep their combat capacity in the field. These will depend on the type of terrain they plan to encounter. Tropical environments require less water and more antibiotics, while arid climates do the opposite. The important thing is to always adapt to that environment and optimize your gear for the task ahead of you.
