Grenades are a very useful tool in both foreign conflicts and domestic situations. They may not be as delicate and precise as rifles, but they can make a massive change in the balance of power and available tactics. Having enough grenade pouches means that you can carry a wider variety, allowing you to adapt to the immediate circumstances and exploit the biggest tactical advantage of explosives. There are six types of grenades, and a good unit composition will usually carry all of them in their grenade pouches:

What are Grenade Pouches?

While it sounds self-explanatory, a grenade pouch is more than just a container to keep your throwing explosives in. Several requirements need to be met for something to serve as a good pouch, especially for equipment that is very dangerous to handle. You need to be able to use it quickly and efficiently, as well as to nullify any risk from the explosive going off when you don’t want it to. The primary requirement is size. This point is tricky and the main reason why there are separate pouches for mags and explosives. The constriction on the grenade needs to be as low as possible so that you can grab it easily and with only one hand. But, while inside the pouch, there should be very little wiggle room and no place for the safety latch to open on its own. Similar to magazine pouches, a grenade pouch should never flap while you are running and should be securely fastened to your belt or plate carrier. In addition to it being annoying and cumbersome while moving, a flapping pouch can also be somewhat dangerous. As some models, like the M47 chemical grenade, are spherical, they need to be safely enclosed inside the pouch when they are not needed. This is also to protect grenades from the direct influence of the elements. Grenade vs. Magazine Pouch

The main difference, and the reason why we can’t substitute one with the other, is the sideways grip a good mag pouch would need to have, which is not present in grenade pouches. While most mags will fit inside a grenade pouch, they will not be as secure and you probably wouldn’t be able to cover most of the larger options, especially when it comes to extended mags. Additionally, while the primary issue for mags is the sideways wiggle, grenades need to be fastened securely on all sides. And, while you want to have your grenades reachable at all times, they should also be positioned on the equipment so to prevent accidental detonation. This approach goes under the maxim that in a bad situation anything that can go wrong will go wrong. For regular police patrols, there would be little difference between the two. But, when you need to jump, roll, and crawl on the ground during a hasty army deployment you will want to have complete confidence that your pouch will hold your military gear correctly.

Types of Grenades to Carry

A good grenade pouch will be able to keep in all five types. Thus, which one you will want to take with you will depend on the mission. Most people focus on high-explosive fragmentation grenades as they can make the most damage. But, for security and advanced combat tactics, you will need to carry at least a spare smoke grenade to signal your allies. These can also be used to provide visual cover and to bling the opponent. Finally, police and private security forces will often want to focus on low-yield and stun grenades, as they reduce collateral damage and can be used to safely apprehend the perpetrator without causing permanent medical harm.
