Head protection is crucial for most jobs, especially when they concern about providing security or quick assistance. While we can withstand slashes and cuts on our hands easily, even a small bump on the head can leave us incapacitated. That is where bump helmets come into action.  These helmets are made to dissipate any impact going towards the head and leave the wearer unharmed. And, because of their light weight, they can be worn by anyone and in most situations. As well as for security and protection, and quite common construction inspections and extreme sports, bump helmets can be used in many other situations. There are three main reasons why you should wear a bump helmet:
  1. Defense against blunt force trauma
  2. Protection from slashing and piercing
  3. Allows for hands-free lighting
Additionally, bump helmets can be quite fashionable and are generally comfortable. If you manage to set the padding on the inside to your exact fit, you will even forget that you are wearing one at points. Thankfully, there are good options for sale currently, and for a reasonable price. Anyone interested to buy a tactical bump helmet will certainly find one to fit their needs.

What are Bump Helmets?

As far as headgear goes, bump helmets are a step beyond simple protective gear. Compared to regular bike helmets, they have a larger protection area and can withstand a more concentrated type of impact. But, they work on the same principle. For one, there is a hard shell on the outer side of the helmet that keeps a convex shape on the top, while narrowing at the sides to form an oval. This design has two distinct advantages. Primarily, it can protect more of the head without becoming cumbersome. Also, the inner shape can be adjusted to the form of everyone’s head, giving more potential protection to the face and sides, which are not covered by the helmet. On the inner side, there is a set of thick padding that works to absorb as much of the impact as possible. Anything not dissipated by the shell will be softened up by these pads. Finally, bump helmets are used to provide assistance as much as protection. The best of these helmets will have slides and attachments where you can place light fixtures, cameras, or some other accessory that you need.

What is a Military Helmet Called?

While both the US military and law enforcement use bump helmets for training purposes, any situation where there is a risk from firearms or explosives demands ballistic helmets. These specialized helmets have a thick middle layer that protects from bullets. A bump helmet is not a military helmet and can’t be used for jobs where you might be under attack by armed assailants. For this, you will need a specialized Kevlar helmet, or a mixture of UHMWPE and Kevlar, under the 0106.01 National Institute of Justice designations. But, compared to military helmets, bump helmets are relatively cheap and much easier to carry around, making it ideal for fresh recruits.

Difference between Bump and Ballistic Helmets

While they might look similar on the outside, you would notice the difference between ballistic helmets and bump helmets once you pick one up. Ballistic helmets are several times heavier than non ballistic helmets. While the weight disparity is big, the difference in use is even bigger. Although bump helmets will protect from slow-moving projectiles and stationary objects that you might run into, they will not stop a bullet from any type of firearm. Additionally, most shrapnel and explosive debris will transfer too much force to the head even if they are not penetrated, causing you to lose consciousness. Finally, compared to ballistic helmets, bump variety will usually have more options for attachments. These come in handy when you are in training, rescue missions, or doing sports, but fall in priority once in armed conflict.
