As Benjamin Franklin once said, the best investment is in the tools of one’s trade. And since soldier’s main tools cost multiple copies of paper with old Ben’s liking, we should do our best to protect them. That is where weapon bags come in as something practical to carry our rifles and sidearms in, and where we can store all of the maintenance tools and attachments as well. Even though a weapons bag is simple when observed in its finished form, there was a lot of thought placed in the production of such a container. There are several things that a weapons bag must have:
  • Ample room for weapons, ammo, and maintenance kit
  • Separate compartments so that the items don’t scrape on each other
  • Protection from dust and moisture
  • Balanced weight
  • Sturdy handles
There is nothing saying how this bag should look, as there are as many types as there are weapons. Those who want to buy something to store their handgun might go for a cross bag or a shoulder bag. But, those who need a place for a rifle will need to go bigger, with something like a weapons duffle bag. Similarly, the price for these units will vary depending on the size and number of features. Compared to what they do they are relatively affordable, and across the board cost less than dedicated weapon cases.

What Makes a Good Weapons Bag?

There are two approaches when buying a weapons bag, depending on where your plan to use the weapon. For those simply interested in transportation, having ample room and good balance will be essential, as it will keep everything organized. On the other hand, if you think you might need your weapon at some point, you will want to have an option of easy access to the gun. This will sacrifice some of the space and will usually be relegated only to handguns. But, it is still a valid option if you want to mix portability and concealed carry capability. In both cases, you will want to be able to easily pull out of the bag anything you need without disturbing other contents. But, with a CC bag, you will want to do that much faster. The same goes for mags and other equipment that you might have.

Types of Weapon Bags

While there are literally hundreds of different models with varying quality for sale all over the internet, all weapon bags can be separated into four categories:
  1. Shoulder carriers
  2. Canvas bags
  3. Duffle bags
  4. Padded Carriers
All of them can house either pistols or rifles and which would you want will depend on the intended use. For concealed carry, shoulder bags are far the most practical. They are light and easy to pick up, and you will always have your weapon within your reach. These bags are rarely used for rifles because it would defeat the purpose. But, there are some hunting models that can house a carbine quite well. Canvas bags are usually used to carry only a single weapon with minimal tools. The advantage of this type of bag is that it can be wrapped around the weapon and takes up very little space. In most cases, you will be able to crunch or fold a canvas bag into something that would fit your back pocket. Weapon duffle bags are on the heavier side and are usually used to house multiple rifles. They can often fit ammo and a full maintenance kit inside. These weapon bags are different from regular duffle bags by the fact that they are squared for easier stacking. Finally, padded bags are rare and a cross between a case and a bag. They are still soft but are usually made for a particular weapon. Also, they can be used as a gun rest on a range, or when hunting.

Weapon Bag vs. Weapon Case

Cases and bags serve the same purpose in two completely different ways. Bags are light, soft, flexible, and can fit multiple models of a weapon, provided that it is of a similar size. Cases are usually made either for a specific model or a family of similar models. They offer a lot more protection than a bag and have a hard shell that guards against impact and shock. If you want to gift someone a pistol with their name engraved on it, you will go with a case, or at least should. But, if you want to transport all of your ARs to a shooting range with the ammo you need and your maintenance kit, you will need to have a large duffle bag that will fit everything in.
