While often disregarded for pedestrian protection or everyday use, helmets are a key component when it comes to overall protection. Ballistic helmets protect from handgun ammunition as well as explosive shrapnel and debris. For those who might encounter any of these issues, it is a piece of gear you can't go without. Aside from bulletproof helmets, tactical gear can sometimes include protective bump helmets that don't protect from ballistic speed projectiles but offer safety from hits, bumps, and falls. Due to their lower weight, these are also used for training purposes in most militaries, as well as for many sports. Generally, helmets can be categorized into three distinct groups:

Thankfully, there are a lot of options for sale, regardless if you need your helmet for security in private situations, or are a member of the police or well-regulated militia trying to protect yourself and your company.

What is the best ballistic helmet?

As with most things, there is no objectively best option for all situations. The best ballistic helmet will be the one best suited for your specific needs. As protection levels increase so will the weight, and staying mobile and adaptable will sometimes be more important than the protection level. In most domestic situations, such as law enforcement or private security, having a relatively light, high cut, NIJ 0106.01 Level II helmet will probably be the ideal choice. It is light, you can hear everything around you, and there is enough protection if somebody tries to bump you in the head or throw something on you. But, in open combat and military missions, as well as high-risk police operations, having a low cut helmet will be prudent. If there is a substantial risk of IEDs or covering fire, this type of security might be necessary. A low cut Level IIIa helmet will stop any flying shrapnel or sharp debris flying your way, providing full coverage of your head and saving your life in the process. It will also reduce the impact damage of the blast itself to a point. Take note that these helmets are quite heavy, and can’t be worn for more than a few hours each day.

Are Ballistic Helmets Bulletproof?

Calling anything bulletproof is a misnomer. It all depends on the type of bullet, what you fire it from, and the condition of the helmet itself. A good NIJ Level IIIa, under the 0106.01 standard, will stop a bullet from any handgun, including high-calibers such as .44cal Magnum, without fatal injuries to the wearer. Rifle ammo, especially from military-grade rifles, will either impact the helmet too hard to leave the wearer unharmed or would pass the protection completely. Ideally, this type of firepower would impact the helmet so as to take it off the wearer, but it will not stop the round on its own. In real-time situations, getting hit in the head from a firearm is not that often. Heads are small and moving targets and are a bad choice for any shooter. Helmets are mostly there to protect from explosives, shrapnel, and blunt damage that often happens amid battle.

Can civilians buy ballistic helmets?

Yes. And, how things are going, they probably should. Since Kevlar protection and helmets can now be found for a reasonable price, it has become a good choice for civilians connected with all sorts of jobs. Most security issues will benefit from civilians wearing some type of head protection. And, with the proliferation of explosive devices, it is a smart choice to complete your duties with as much protection as you can manage. Finally, it is our patriotic duty in the US to be prepared to protect our freedoms and way of life, and keeping a helmet will protect us in that case.
