Loading vests, in their original form, are now mostly relics of the past before modular equipment. They were standard issue for the US Army interceptor body armor and were used to add much-needed utility to a standard plate carrier. Now, you will rarely buy a loading vest as a whole, but rather from parts. Because modern warfare and security sector demand for smaller units with higher versatility, modular equipment is now standard. An average company will want to have a choice of how much ammo, medkits, explosives, or any other type of gear they want everyone to carry. Thus, everyone opts to make their own unloading vest rather than to get one already finished and unchangeable. Generally, a modern loading vest should have three things:
  1. Good weight distribution
  2. Complementary attachments with the plate carrier
  3. Modular layout options
If these conditions are met, there are dozens of different pouches, holsters, and containers for sale that can be attached to this system. This approach not only increases the amount of gear you can carry but also reduces the overall price as there won’t be any unused pockets or unnecessary gear.

What Is an Unloading Vest?

An unloading vest is designed to house as much of auxiliary gear as possible. It can be used by police or army personnel to increase their tactical range without encumbering their hands. Also, unlike a backpack, all of that gear would be instantly available. Previously, an unloading vest was used together with a bulletproof vest or plate armor carrier. But, as new technologies allowed for plate carriers to be more versatile, they are now most often found as two parts of the same thing. Modern unloading vests are extensions for a plate carrier that usually goes around the plate itself. Modular parts include a clavicle carrier (load-bearing), suspenders, battle belt, and a chest rig. In case that the plate carrier has a MOLLE webbing feature, pouches on the PC would serve as an unloading vest. For soft armor, there is a possibility to use a whole unloading vest over the bulletproof one. But, since that point of a covert vest is for you to stay incognito and not recognized as a target, this loses its point.

Unloading Vest vs. Plate Carrier Load-out

An unloading vest is a done deal. The gear you want to take will be adjusted to space you have on the vest. While this might reduce the costs when supplying a whole army, for a quick response unit this system means that the gear will always be sub-optimal. A plate carrier with MOLLE webbing can be upgraded with multiple pouches, holsters, and kits to make the exact layout needed for a mission. And, because of the semi-permanent nature of the webbing connection, you can change the settings if you need to carry something different. Having a dedicated unloading vest will still come in handy for civilian situations, such as hunting, fishing, or camping. But, if you need to have ballistic protection as well as utility, having the option to modulate your gear will always be preferable.

Combining Protection and Utility

Modern warfare, and the security sector in general, if quite different than what it was prior to 2001. Open field battles and large land maneuvers are now a rarity and most countries today only have a handful of divisions as their active military.  Missions are usually reduced to a platoon or squad level, with battalions often focusing on the entire effort. Because of this reduction, sections became more versatile and they now need to address a wider variety of missions. Efforts are also made to drastically reduce any loss of life and to protect soldiers in the field by any means necessary. This need for combining protection and utility has militarized the unloading vest in the first place. Now, that vest is improved to have as little excess weight as possible by combining rigs, plate carriers, and other tactical gear.

Rigs and Load Bearing Equipment

Chest rigs and clavicle load-bearing equipment may have become an addition to a plate carrier setup rather than a separate item, but they are still essential when it comes to advanced squad tactics. Good load-bearing straps will help you adjust the weight of your entire gear, as well as your battle belt. This will increase the maneuverability of the soldier, as well as reduce pressure to the body.
