While for some the terms ‘civilian’ might have a ring of a comfortable office job, most are far more dangerous. Additionally, unlike an army where you have your fellow soldiers to watch your back, in most civilian situations you will be mostly on your own. Here is where you need your body armor to shine. There are three categorizations of tactical civilian body armor, depending on which type of situations you tend to find yourself in:

Regretfully, the reasons why you might choose one over another are not always purely practical. Some employers might disallow wearing overt vests due to customer concerns or appearances. And, at other times, it would not be beneficial if anyone knows that you are wearing any armor. The good thing is that there are options. For those looking to protect themselves and buy some armor to wear during the day, there are multiple good choices for sale. And, compared to what they do, the price is more than adequate.

Do You Really Need Body Armor?

Depending on where you live and what you do, this answer may vary from ‘probably’ to ‘most definitely’. Unless you do your work remotely and rarely leave the house, you would benefit from having a piece of armor that you can wear daily. While gun crimes might not be as prevalent in the US as the media would like us to believe, they still happen. And, for some jobs, you might be at particular risk from stumbling upon someone that would want to hurt you. Additionally, even routine tasks like going to the bank or convenience store can end up in a situation where you will need to protect yourself. Wearing armor and carrying a weapon is always a wise thing to do. It would be akin to always having an EpiPen with you if you are allergic.

Should Security Guards Wear Body Armor?

This is one of the examples of a job where you should always wear body armor. Ideally, it should be NIJ Level IIIa, able to protect from larger handgun rounds. But, there is a question where is your station located, as well as what are you protecting. If you are tasked to protect venues such as clubs or public events, or you are a personal protection officer to a VIP, you will want to go covert. This will lower the focus on you and your gear and prevent a potential attacker to quickly assess the level of protection your team provides, giving you a tactical advantage. Otherwise, when protecting a location that is not bothered with appearances toward customers, you will want to have an external carrier for multiple reasons. Primarily, it is easy to wear over whatever you had underneath, and you can always wear additional gear or utility pouches on it. Second, the more militaristic appearance of the external carrier might dissuade many potential burglars or attackers from even attempting to enter.

What Is the Best Civilian Body Armor?

The best type of body armor for any civilian would be the one that fits their routine. Because it is there ‘just in case’ you don’t want it to stop you from doing your daily tasks as well as you would without it. In most cases, a concealed bulletproof vest under your shirt will be enough. As most gun crimes are committed with a 9mm pistol, this vest will be sufficient to stop the bullet and prevent any severe damage. Some bruising will occur. But, if you are unsure about the situations you will find yourself in, you should strive for versatility. A vest where you can attach your pouches, holsters and other types of gear that would increase your individual survivability would always be a wise choice.

Can Civilians Own Level 4 Body Armor?

All law-abiding citizens inside the United States of America are perfectly within their right to own and wear NIJ Level IV body armor, or any other type of armor for that matter. The only group explicitly forbidden from owning armor in the US are convicted felons that served time for violent crimes. But, for those who have paid back their due to society, there is still an option to have permission requested by the employers to wear body armor, if your job demands it.
